Ya Boy Kongming is musical-comedy anime produced by P.A. works adapted from the manga writings of Yuto Yotsuba.
The plot follows Zhuge Liang Kongming, a tactical genius of the three kingdom empire, who is struck by illness and is awaiting his death in the year 234.
In his final moments, Kongming wishes to be reborn into a world with peace without war. His wish gets granted as Kongming is reborn into modern-day Shibuya, Tokyo, as his younger self.
Completely unaware of his surroundings, Kongming visits a nightclub where he finds a beautiful aspiring singer named Eiko Tsukimi performing, which leaves him transfixed and captivated.
Soon enough, Eiko notices Kongming s’ struggles in adapting to the habits of the new world and decides to help him find his way. Kongming is grateful for Eiko s’ help, and he becomes his new manager as he vows to make her a singing sensation.
In the unforgivable music industry, can the former Chinese statesman make Eiko s’ dream come true while getting used to the modern ways is the central plot of the show.
You Boy Kongming easily takes the title for the unique show this season, and this is the epitome of what makes anime stand out from western media.
It’s able to shove a bunch of random ideas that have no correlation to each other and somehow make it work with some genuinely endearing scenes that make you forget how the odd premise.

As of writing, there is no official confirmation from the creator or writer for the renewal of Ya Boy Kongming season 2.

Although the series concluded only recently, it was probably a surprise to many fans of its lack of renewal despite the immense popularity it received.
Not only did Ya boy Kongming do well on the user ratings (check below) with an average rating of 7.6/10, but it also became the fourth most watched Anime/T.V. show & Film on Japanese SVOD services in June 2022.

Considering Ya Boy Kongming isn’t a long-running shonen series like One piece or a Popular Tv show like Stranger Things, it was a massive achievement.
While the show is delivering its worth in the ratings, there is, however, a bigger concern regarding the renewal chances. The point of concern lies with the studio, i.e., P.A. Works, who historically don’t do sequels and are more focused on original works.
If we look at the source material, the first season only adapted the first four volumes out of ten volumes. With six volumes remaining for the second season, creators should not face any problems regarding source materials.
Ultimately, even if the show turns out to be a financial success, the fate of Ya Boy Kongming season 2 lies with the studio’s discretion itself. A major credit for the show s success goes to its plot and the main character Zhuge Liang Kongming.
Kongming has transported thousands of years in the future, and he was curious to learn about phones, clocks, and, of course, music. There are many shows out there that revolve around music sometimes, it’s secondary to the main plot or characters, and other times, it takes center stage.
As the show wants to explore what music means to its character as, in particular, music was a form of salvation and encouragement, having realized that there was no way of returning to the past or reuniting with his comrades.
Kongming felt alone in an unfamiliar world but it was Eiko’s music that was able to give him hope. The more we watch this scene, the more we empathize with him, and it’s this idea that can never truly be forgotten.
It’s unique to see him apply war tactics to something that’s on a much smaller scale. He is a strategist who manages to find new and creative ways to help Eiko reach her goal, but he doesn’t want to be the one doing the actual heavy lifting.
He’s quick to understand where Eiko s’ weaknesses are and wants her to overcome them on her own. Kongming will help her find an audience, but her singing will keep them coming back.
Kongming feels the same sentiment towards Eiko as it’s reminiscent of something like carol in Tuesday, a story about two underground artists who want to convey their feelings with their music. These underdog stories with an absurd premise, but hiding underneath the surface is something that has the potential to be something extraordinary.
Ya Boy Kongming manga is written by Yuto Yotsuba and illustrated by Ryō Ogawa. It began serialization in Comic Days initially and later moved to Weekly Young Magazine on 22nd November 2021. The manga series has been collected into ten volumes, with the latest issue being on 6th July 2022.
According to Crunchyroll, the manga sold over 1 million copies in print and digital.

The second season will begin by adapting the fifth volume from the manga. Eiko will be responsible for composing new songs after securing a place at Summer Sonia.
Kongming is ready to help her by finding out jazz music artists called Wakatsuki siblings. However, the siblings have a quarrel, and it’s Kongming s’ responsibility to bring them together by impersonating a D.J.
Additionally, Eiko s’ mother, Shoko, believes the city is too big for her, and a music career isn’t right either. Kongming will be acting again as the bridge between the mother and daughter.
Shoko agrees to give Eiko a chance if her next song, Flower Crown, is a hit. Eiko agrees and travels to Tokyo to find inspiration which has memories of her estranged memories of a relationship with her mother.
