So, when the Fall of 2019 brought about the anime adaption of Hiraki Samura s’ manga series, Blade of the Immortal, there was genuine excitement.
The story follows a swordsman Manji who is infamously known as the “Hundred Man Killer” due to his act of massacring one hundred innocent men. But his moniker is the least frightening thing about him as his immortality earns him a far ominous reputation.
The secret to eternal life comes from an 800-year-old nun named Yaobikuni, who can keep Manji alive from any wounds by “sacred bloodworms.” These worms sacrifice their life and seal any life-threatening injury through their chemical and physical makeup.
Manji is on a path of avenge for his dead sister by killing 1,000 evil men, and if he succeeds, Yaobikuni will undo the curse of immortality.
In his journey, Manji meets a teenage girl Rin Asano who pleads for his help to kill those people who murdered her parents.
Seeing the girl s’ lack of strength, Manji accepts Rin s’ request and promises to protect her for four years while slaying her parents’ killers.
Blade Of The Immortal Season one was a relative success as most fans enjoyed the revenge dark fantasy drama.
However, three years after the first season s’ release, fans are wondering if and when the second installment will come out.

Blade Of The Immortal Season one was a financial success considering it was released on one of the biggest streaming platforms, i.e., Amazon Prime Video.
Creators Liden Films have developed popular ONAs like Kotaro Lives Alone and Bastard!! -Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy.
Currently, the production studio has three projects Goblin Slayer II, Rurouni Kenshin, and Gods’ Games We Play, for 2023 which could delay Blade Of The Immortal Season 2.
The only gripe which has been preventing a renewal for so long has been the source material.
The first season was based on the Blade Of The Immortal manga, which was serialized from 1993 through 2012.
However, Blade Of The Immortal Season 2 will be based on the Blade of the Immortal: Bakumatsu Arc manga series written by Kenji Takigawa and illustrated by Ryū Suenobu that launched in Kodansha’s Monthly Afternoon magazine on May 25, 2019.
The good news is that there is enough source material to produce a sequel, with more than eight volumes available for Blade Of The Immortal Season 2.

Blade Of The Immortal manga is written and illustrated by Hiroaki Samura. It began serializing in Monthly Afternoon magazine from 25th June 1993 to 25th December 2012.
The manga has been collected into 219 chapters and thirty volumes, with the latest issue released on 1st April 2015.
A sequel manga titled Blade of the Immortal: Bakumatsu Arc, written by Kenji Takigawa and illustrated by Ryū Suenobu was launched in Kodansha’s Monthly Afternoon magazine on May 25, 2019.
The sequel manga has been collected into six volumes, with the latest issue released on 5th October 2022.

In the final episode of Blade of the Immortal season one, “Final Act – Blade of the Immortal,” it revealed that Hanabusa is behind the shooting at the piers.
Despite being injured, Makie makes a last-ditch effort and succeeds in killing Hanabusa s’ small force.
Hanabusa escapes the fray but is cornered by Anotsu, who cuts him open with approval from Kagimura.
The pair reconvene the battle wherein Kagimura faces defeat and is killed by Anotsu s’ initial charge.
The ripple-down effect continues as this time, Anotsu s’ arm is cut off by Manji as Hyakurin watches things unfold. Manji tells Rin that Anotsu is killed, but in reality, he gives him mercy by letting him live with the promise he never returns.
But before Anotsu can sail away, Rin stabs and instantly kills him. The scene shifts to the Shimbara region, wherein Isaku and Doa have become farmers while Manji is banished from Edo.
Rin apologizes to Itto ryu as she pays her respect at the family s’ grave.
Fast forward eight years, Manji is asked to protect a young girl whose family is engaged in a dispute. The girl gives Manji a sheathed knife as she realizes she is Rin’s great-great-granddaughter.
Blade Of The Immortal Season 2 will adapt the Bakumatsu Arc from the sequel Blade of the Immortal: Bakumatsu Arc manga.
The story is set in the Bakumatsu period, and Mani has aged to a hundred years, which consequently has stopped him from counting birthdays.
He is still immortal and has been residing in Shikoku, Japan, where he teaches English to a young boy named Niijima Shimeta.
Blade Of The Immortal Season 2 characters will include a samurai named Ryoma Sakamoto, who enjoys listening to Manji s’ tales and even believes in his immortality.
Ryoma also is keen on Manji s’ past romantic interest, but the hundred-year-old isn’t interested in giving any answers.
Although Manji has killed over 1,000 men, he hasn’t been able to break the curse, and Ryoma suggests seeking penance by helping others.
Blade Of The Immortal anime is directed by Hiroshi Hamasaki with series composition by Makoto Fukami. Characters are designed by Shingo Ogiso, and the music is composed by Eiko Ishibashi.
